Recover underexposed images to create stunning images

What is an underexposed image?

Underexposure occurs when there is insufficient light hitting the film strip or camera sensor. Photos that are underexposed are excessively dark, have little detail in the shadows, and seem muddy. A photograph that is too dark is underexposed. Details will be lost in the image's shadows and darkest parts.

Why should I shoot in RAW?

When I initially utilised manual mode on a DSLR camera, many of my shots were underexposed (low light/dark image) or overexposed (more light/white image). Fortunately, I had recorded these photographs in RAW (.NEF in Nikon) format rather than JPEG. Before I go any further, what exactly is an underexposed image?

Apsarkonda beach in Karnataka - Underexposed image

There is a distinction between taking photographs in RAW and JPEG formats. Even though it requires more memory, it is preferable to shoot photographs in RAW format. The reason for this is that photographs shot in RAW format may be modified (post-processed) in any way you desire using photo editing software like Lightroom or Photoshop, but JPEG files cannot (i mean not lossless, not without losing color information). RAW files include all of the information, whereas JPEG files are compressed versions of the same image. When an image is compressed, information or data is lost, and these image editors have no method of recovering the lost data in the picture.

How can I edit an underexposed photo?

If you take a picture in RAW format that is underexposed, you may quickly edit it in Photoshop and restore the shot by extracting the hidden information in the image. To restore an underexposed photograph, follow these steps:

  • Import the photo to Lightroom or Photoshop directly or using bridge.
  • Goto developer module so that you can edit your image.
  • For an underexposed photo, the histogram (grey) or the graph will have a huge spike to the left.
  • Try moving this spike to center and the height of the spike will also reduce by moving the "Blacks" slider to the right.
  • Now try increasing the "Shadows" (by moving the slider to the right).
  • If you still see a spike then try increasing the "Exposure" (by moving the slider to the right).
Underexposed image

These three techniques will assist you in restoring an underexposed photograph. The effects will be more evident and beneficial if you are editing a RAW underexposed image because it has all of the information required for modification. Editing an underexposed JPEG image may not yield satisfactory results due to the lack of colour information. When editing, consider both the image and the histogram. There is no set number to use when moving these sliders; it is determined by the image.

In the above image, it was season's first snow fall at Tarsar Lake in Kashmir, India. It was all white and with my default camera setting it appeared overexposed. I had to play around with the aperture settings, to allow light to the sensor, to get an underexposed image.

How do you tell if a photo is underexposed or overexposed?

A photograph that is too dark is underexposed. Details will be lost in the image's shadows and darkest parts. Overexposure occurs when a photograph is overexposed. Details will be lost in the image's highlights and brightest areas. Most cameras nowadays offer a feature that allows the underexposed section of a picture to be highlighted with flashing lines in the camera's live display on the rear. This is quite important since you can easily alter the settings or perspective to get better photos. Always try to capture the right image in camera rather than in post-production.

Insufficient Space on SD card - Super easy Fix in 10 seconds

Assume you were trekking in the Himalayas and your camera memory card is running low on space and getting an error message that says - Insufficient Space. Most of us stop taking photographs and instead store some memory for some gorgeous and fascinating photos that we will capture later. You may get some intriguing images as a result, but you may also lose out on many more essential shots that you could have gotten if you had an extra camera memory card. Here are a few pointers on how to manage and shoot more pictures with the available space on your camera memory card without missing out on any stunning surroundings.

Manage with existing Camera memory card - Insufficient Space
Insufficient memory message

Optimizing memory card usage to avoid Insufficient Space

  • Change the camera settings so that photographs are captured in either RAW or JPEG (RAW is always preferable), but not both at the same time. These days, cameras include dual slots that allow you to insert two memory cards into the camera. When you shoot/write/save an image, the same image is saved on both cards (usually done to be on safer side by wedding photographers, just in case if one memory card fails). To preserve memory, you may need to disable this option.
  • Change the 14-bit to 12-bit settings in the camera's settings. A 14-bit camera RAW file may waste almost 27-30 MB of space for each shot, but if you alter the settings to 12 bit (RAW file), the memory consumed would be around 19-23 MB. Furthermore, the difference between 12 and 14 bit should be negligible, and you will still be recording in RAW.
  • Switch from RAW to JPEG as the image format (high). This will save a lot of memory, but keep in mind that shooting photographs in RAW is always preferable to JPEG because JPEG loses a lot of colour information and the lost image data is unrecoverable. RAW is usually preferable, but if you don't have another alternative, choose high-quality JPEG photos. Each RAW (NEF) format shot takes up over 30MB of space (on my Nikon D610), but a JPEG good quality photograph takes up 10 to 12 MB.
  • If you don't care about image quality and just want shots to post on social media, JPEG (regular or low) quality images are OK. Trust me it is still good enough for social media usage and you will never face insufficient space issues.
  • For less important photographs, use your camera's built-in software to convert RAW to JPEG format and delete the RAW format photos. When I take landscape and nature shots, I generally use RAW format, and when I capture group photos of our hiking group, I usually use JPEG- High.
  • Delete any duplicate or highly similar photos. Check for crappy video recordings and remove them first because they take up more space than images. You may even erase videos that are excessively shaky.
  • Examine your previously acquired photographs, erase any undesired fuzzy images, over or under exposed images (if captured in JPEG), and so on.

Good practice for lenghty trips

It's a good idea to acquire an additional camera memory card if you're going on a lengthy trip or hiking for a week. During my week-long Himalayan climb, I normally bring two 64 GB flash drives. These days, you can even obtain 256 and 512 GB SDXC memory cards, but be sure your existing camera supports this large amount of storage before purchasing these cards. Also, look into the read/write speed that is supported.

Dual card slots usage

Usage of Dual card slots to make duplicate copies in-camera may be avoided which is not recommended, but if you do not have any other option then at least one copy is better than nothing. Most high-end cameras have dual card slots, and there is an option in the camera settings to overflow or make a duplicate copy in the second memory card slot that is accessible. Set this to overflow, and it will begin loading the second memory card in the second slot once the first memory card in slot one is filled.

How OTG Card Reader can help with Insufficient Space?

I've been carrying a USB Type C OTG Card Reader these days so that I don't have to carry my laptop and then use a card reader to copy and store it to the hard drive for cloud storage. Instead, I utilize this USB Type C OTG Card Reader to copy the material to my mobile device, then transfer the data directly to my Google Drive or any other cloud storage account.

Cloud Storage

Furthermore, data is dirt cheap, and cloud storage is now far cheaper and more dependable than any hard drive (HDD). With the usage of cloud storage, 'Insufficient Space' is history. I'm not getting any more hard drives because I lost three of them with all of my data on them. I had to learn my lessons the hard way. However, I prefer to carry at least one external memory storage, preferably an SSD hard drive. Also, these days, cameras come with built-in WiFi, transfer the files to your mobile device and then to the cloud, and free up your camera space.

The above tips will help you save a lot of your camera memory card space, and make good use of it. Hope your issue is now fixed and you enjoyed reading this blog post. A fearful drive from Kathgodam -Roopkund Trek - Day 1

My Roopkund hike begins with a vehicle trip from Kathgodam to Lohajung. We had to prepare carefully because this was a week-long expedition. We flew from Bangalore to Delhi and then caught the 'Ranikhet Express' train from Delhi Cant to Kathgodam railway station. It's a good idea to book a flight at least three months in advance so that you may buy airline tickets at a very low price, a tip for booking tickets at a lower price.

On the way from Kathgodam to Lohajung

The nearest train station is Delhi Cantonment (Cant.), which is around 20 minutes away by local prepaid cab from Delhi Airport. Local car or taxi drivers refer to Cantonment as "Caaannnt"  We took a sleeper train and arrived at railway station early in the morning, which is near to Nainital (a gigantic mango-shaped lake and a hill station) which we planned to visit as a one-day trip on our way back from the Roopkund trek.

Where is Kathgodam?

Kathgodam (554 meters, 1818 feet) is the final Indian railway station/stop, after which the only way to continue is via taxi or bus. This railway station is also the major gathering place for most trekkers since trekkers depart from here on various routes depending on the journey or destination they select.

Summer in Uttarakhand

How far is Kathgodam from Nainital?

The road distance between Kathgodam and Nainital is 34 kilometers. You'll initially travel the same route from the railway station to Lohajung, but you'll need to take a diversion to get to Lohajung. On the way, you may see Bhemtal, which is around 21 kilometers from the railway station.

Reaching Lohajung (Roopkund base camp)

We took a taxi (Sumo or Jeep) from the railway station to Lohajung (2350 meters, 7700 feet), the Roopkund base camp, which is around a 10- to 11-hour jeep journey with only one or two pauses for lunch and a tea break. The jeep ride may produce nausea in some people due to the route's altitude climb of about 2 kilometers by the time you reach base camp, as well as the many steep/hair-pin twists along the river's bank passing many iron bridges.

Which Baba did Steve Jobs meet in India?

Neem Karoli Baba - In April 1974, Steve Jobs flew to India with his buddy Dan Kottke to study Hinduism and Indian spirituality; they also planned to see Neem Karoli Baba, but when they arrived, the guru had died the previous September. Julia Roberts, a Hollywood actress, was also impacted by Neem Karoli Baba.

On the way, you'll pass by the Kausani Tea Estate, from which you may have a spectacular view of the Himalayas if the weather is nice or if it's a clear day. Furthermore, there are several hotels called Dabas in this region where you may stop for a quick north Indian meal for lunch.

If you're used to the scenery of Southern India, you'll notice a difference here. There are just steep mountains with few trees and practically dry rivers. Furthermore, the majority of the slopes in this region are terrace farmed, where wheat, potatoes, and other crops are grown. Furthermore, as you gain height, the temperature drops and it might be chilly at night. Beautiful scenery, green-colored iron bridges, vertical pine trees, green or gold-colored terraced agricultural slopes, landslides, and so on.

Lohajung Basecamp

The mountains here are not built of solid rock like the ones in the western ghats, but rather of sediments discovered on the seafloor, and landslides are common. We didn't have enough time to get down, set up a tripod, and take photographs, but I did manage to poke my head out every now and again to grab some fantastic scenery images. After a day-long jeep trip, we arrived in Lohajung, which is our Roopkund base camp/starting point for our hiking.

Photoshop cannot open Camera RAW - Fix this annoying issue Now

What is Camera Raw?

Camera Raw is an image editor that is non-destructive. Nothing in the original RAW file is ever modified permanently. Instead, all modifications are saved to a sidecar file (or, if the file is a DNG, they can be embedded). Saving photographs from Camera Raw might be puzzling.

Almost all DSLRs including some of the latest basic cameras come with an option to shoot Raw images instead of just JPEG. It's always better to shoot images in Raw format instead of JPEG. Even in JPEG, there are different types like low, medium, and high-quality JPEG images, but all of these JPEG images are compressed images, and not all image information is saved. Whereas images captured in Raw format can be used to recover some of the lost content when compared to JPEG images using tools like Lightroom, Photoshop, or any other photo editing tools.

www.ravindrajoisa.com

Is Camera Raw free?

It was a free Photoshop plug-in designed to make picture processing and development as easy and straightforward as possible. As of this writing, it is not for free. This is included with Photoshop as part of the subscription. Photoshop and Lightroom have a monthly membership fee of $10 USD. Adobe Bridge, a file manager, has support.

Photoshop cannot open this file - Issue

I recently purchased a full-frame camera and shot photographs in RAW format. To edit these RAW photographs, I utilized a friend's PC that had Photoshop and Lightroom loaded and was in need of it. I was able to effortlessly upload photographs into Lightroom, but when I attempted to import RAW images (NEF format file for Nikon) into Photoshop, it just would not work. Even when I utilized Bridge, it did not function. As shown above, I received a pop-up notice stating, "Photoshop cannot open this file," with a link to Adobe Photoshop assistance.

Photoshop raw image import issue
Source: Photoshop

You are seeing this image because you are using an earlier version of Camera RAW import software (plugin) and the image was captured with the most recent camera. When I verified with my buddy, he told me that the Photoshop software was installed before the camera was available to the public and that he had not performed any software updates.

Either upgrade your Photoshop or Lightroom software to the latest version or fix this issue by following the following steps:

  • First, check the version that's already installed by navigating to Help>> About Plugin >> Camera RAW and a pop-up will appear as shown above with the version number. As you can see, the version is Version 7.0.0.308.
  • Now, go to the Adobe help website for the Camera RAW plugin and look for a compatible camera. Here is a list of cameras that support the this format. The supported version for my Nikon D600/D610 camera is 7.3. (min.). As a result, I must download and upgrade the plugin. This is a free download that can be obtained from the Adobe website.
adobe camera raw version
Source: Adobe
  • Download the latest or the supported version of Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter.
  • Install the software and convert the RAW file into DNG format and try importing the image to Photoshop.
  • The image that you imported will now be opened and all the raw image details will be pulled in.
  • You can now proceed with the post processing.

If you are using a Mac machine, then you can download the right version either directly from Photoshop or from the above link. The above link is for Windows, similarly, you can download it for Mac machines as well.

What is Camera Raw vs Lightroom?

Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw both edit Raw files in a non-destructive manner. This implies that the Raw file remains unchanged, while modifications are stored in a separate file. Lightroom saves modifications by default in a specific LRCAT catalog file. Adobe Camera Raw keeps modifications in a separate folder rather than a cataloging database.

Whats the difference between Camera Raw and Lightroom?

One of the most significant distinctions between Lightroom and Camera Raw is that Lightroom is image manipulation and organizing software, whereas Camera Raw is simply for picture modification. As a result, ACR cannot be used to manage your files (no file management features exist).

What is the difference between Adobe Camera Raw plugin and Photoshop?

Consider Camera Raw to be a picture developer, whereas Photoshop is an image editor. Camera Raw is where we conduct all of our early processing work in a Camera Raw/Photoshop workflow - adjusting the general white balance, exposure, contrast, and color saturation adding some basic sharpening, minimizing noise, and more.

Recover overexposed images to create stunning images

How many times have you accidentally captured an overexposed image or an underexposed image? It is good to capture multiple images and experiment with different camera settings? That's good. Well, these images look good when you look through the small display in your camera but when you download the image to your computer, the image can be one of the three - normal, overexposed, or underexposed. You can always check your camera histogram and make out if you have captured underexposed or overexposed images and adjust the camera accordingly to get the best photo.

What is an overexposed image?

Overexposed images occur when too much light strikes the film or, in the case of a digital camera, the sensor. Overexposed photographs are overly bright, lack clarity in the highlights, and seem washed out. These photos are rendered useless.

Mt Trishul, Snow-white mountains that are overexposed

Is it better to be overexposed or underexposed?

If you're shooting JPEG, the conventional guideline is to underexpose since if you lose the highlights in a JPEG, they're gone, unrecoverable. When shooting raw, the usual guideline is to overexpose the image to bring more light (exposure) into the shadows.

How do I fix overexposed photos?

Overexposed photos are overly bright, making even the darkest side appear brighter. If you captured this photograph in RAW format, there is a technique to correct it. You can repair it even if the image is in JPEG, but the outcome will be inferior since JPEG files are already compressed and include only 250 layers of color/brightness, whereas RAW images have thousands. Because JPEG is a compressed picture, the image information is already destroyed, and there is no method to retrieve the lost data in the image.

To recover overexposed images that you have captured follow the following steps:

  • Import the overexposed image to Lightroom or Photoshop using direct method or using bridge.
  • Select the image and go to 'Developer' mode.
  • For most of the overexposed images, histogram will have a peak to the right corner.
  • If there is a peak to the right and empty space to the left, then move the 'Whites' slider to the left.
  • If there is a peak to the right and the space to the left of histogram is not empty then try moving the 'Highlights' to the left instead of 'Whites'.
  • Even after decreasing the 'Highlights' and 'Whites' if the histogram shows peak to the right or if the image is too bright then try to bring down the 'Exposure' component by moving the slider to the left.
  • To give additional effects to the dark areas, try increasing the 'Shadows'.
overexposed images
Post-processing using Lightroom

The options are almost the same in Lightroom and Photoshop. If you are using an older version of Photoshop or Lightroom, then the sliders might have a different name and also, the sliders. The same applies to many of the online photo editing tools. See that you try to bring the histogram peak from the right corner to somewhere in the middle and not spikes to the left or right corner of the histogram.

Use of ND filters to avoid over exposure

The other alternative is to experiment with ND filters, particularly when taking long exposure shots in daylight. Cloudscape shots can be taken both at night and during the day, however, taking a long exposure shot during the day will require a higher-stop ND filter to exclude extra light entering the sensor and avoid overexposed images. It is always preferable to get the image correct on camera rather than in post-production. Read more on - Capture Cloud movement using ND Filter.

In-camera technique

Most cameras these days have a function that allows the overexposed region of the image to be emphasized with flashing lines in the live display on the backside of the camera. This is quite useful since you can quickly tweak the settings or change the angle to obtain better photographs. Always attempt to get the image correct in camera rather than in post-production. This feature is now available in action cameras such as the DJI Action camera.

AI-based photo editing

Today's AI-based editing technologies are so advanced that you can replace the entire overexposed sky with a different one and entirely change the aesthetic of the image. Even sky reflections on the water surfaces are handled using AI-based editing tools without spending too much of your time. Luminar AI is one such AI-based photo-editing application that performs an excellent job of modifying photographs while also saving time. This editing tool outperforms many of the existing well-established picture editing companies on the market, and they aren't even close when it comes to AI-based editing.

Calculate the depth of field to get sharp stunning images

Depth of field (DoF) is the distance between the closest and furthest objects in a picture that is in acceptably sharp focus for various cameras. The depth of field may be computed using focal length, subject distance, permissible circle of confusion size, and aperture.

Punaka Dzong

People love to see and take photographs and want their photos to look like a photo shot by a professional photographer. They read books, attend class, practice much stuff but when it comes to understanding their own camera they still lack a hundred percent knowledge. Understanding your own camera and the lens that you use is equally important. You should know what settings to use, where the buttons are etc. to get the right photo at the right time.

The worst case is you see a beautiful bird and want to capture it. But, by the time you search for buttons and change settings, the bird might have gone to some other location. In addition to knowing about your camera, it's good to know about the depth of field as well. It's good to calculate and plan low light macro and landscape photos where the range of sharpness is of high importance.

What is the depth of field in photography?

As a result, DoF is defined as the distance between the components in a scene that seem "acceptably crisp" in a picture. DoF near limit refers to the distance between the camera and the first element that is regarded as sharp enough.

What is depth of field and why is it important?

Depth of field is a critical topic to grasp since it may help your picture stand out. A shallow DoF will result in a shot with both close and distant objects in sharp focus. A narrow DoF will focus attention on the most significant aspect of your photograph.

What is an example of depth of field?

A short depth of field is useful for focusing on anything near to your camera. For example, a close-up of a bird, as shown in the image below, would necessitate a small depth of field. To obtain a shallow depth of field, you need a big aperture, which means smaller F-stops, such as f/2.8.

How do you use depth of field?

The first law of aperture and DoF is straightforward, the wider the aperture, the shallower the depth of field, which means a smaller section of your image will be in focus. The narrower the aperture, the greater the depth of field, resulting in more of your image being in focus.

How do you measure depth of field?

It is always beneficial to learn more about your camera and lens. I shoot using a Nikon D610 with a 50mm 1.4d prime lens. The Nikon D610 sports a full-frame 35mm sensor. To calculate the depth of field, you must first determine what is regarded as acceptable sharpness, also known as the circle of confusion (CoC), which is connected to the size of the camera sensor and viewing distance.

It is worth noting that the DoF rises as the viewing distance increases. A full-frame camera or a camera with a bigger sensor will have a greater CoC since the collected pictures do not need to be magnified considerably, but they require a longer focal length to get the same field of view.

Depth of field calculator

The image above is from a tool for calculating the depth of field. Here is the URL to this tool, which you may use to test it for yourself. This tool is quite useful for determining what camera settings are required to get the desired level of sharpness. This tool is useful, but it is not required that you constantly use the same settings, but it is good to understand how focal length and aperture impact the image that you capture using your camera and lens.

Take note that if you are unsure of what values to enter in the calculator, consult the handbook that came with the camera and lens that you are using. Give it a shot; it's always nice to be aware of new things, and it'll help you get better photographs.

What factors affect depth of field?

Depth of Field is affected by four factors: Aperture, Subject to Camera Distance (the closer your camera is to your subject, the shallower the DoF in your image), Lens Focal Length, and Camera Sensor Size.

Kanamo Peak

What is deeper depth of field?

A shallow depth of field produces a bigger region in focus by keeping more of the image crisp and clear. A large depth of field is a term that is used occasionally. Deep depths of field are ideal for landscape photography since they have a greater field of vision in focus. A tiny aperture should be employed to capture such crispness.

Spot Healing in Lightroom - A wonderful feature to use

Spot healing has been available in Photoshop and Lightroom for quite some time. Despite the fact that there are far too many photo editing programs available, nothing beats Lightroom and Photoshop. The content aware fill and subsequent improvements have made spot healing one of the most often utilized capabilities, particularly in portrait photography.

What is Spot Healing?

You may have visited a location for sightseeing or vacation and taken some very great photographs. The first thing we do is share it with our friends or on social media, where we may enjoy the likes and comments. But what if these photographs contain a wire or plastic item in front of a stunning environment or any form of dust that might disturb your image viewers? There is a procedure known as 'spot healing' that may be used to eliminate this.

I recently returned from a week of Himalayan hiking to Alpine Lakes in Kashmir, India, where even after cleaning my camera, I saw a few dust specks in the final photograph. This was due to dust in the lens and on my camera sensor. This might have happened while changing the lens. A single dust particle was enough to detract from the entire image. I had to utilize spot healing using some of the photo editing tools to solve this.

How do you use the Spot Healing brush tool?

As shown in the image below once the image is opened in Lightroom or Photoshop it will be in your library by default. Switch to 'Develop' mode and click on the spot healing circle (marked in red circle). Once you click on this, you get more options under spot edit where you can adjust the size and opacity. Once it's set, click on the spot that is to be healed - circle A in the image below.

spot healing in Lightroom
Spot Healing using Lightroom

To select a larger region increase the circle size or just drag around the selected spot in the image. Once this is done the software will auto select another region of the image from where that part of the image is copied. If you are not happy with it then you can select another region by moving circle B to a different region. I would recommend zooming into the photo and then doing this activity and also selecting small regions instead of large circles.

Most of the photo editing tools have this feature called spot healing, but when it comes to Photoshop or Lightroom the spot healing that is done is just too good. These two tools have an algorithm called 'content awareness' using which it will look into the best match to spot that is to be healed by looking at the spot surroundings. You can also use spot healing to remove unwanted obstructions to bring in focus on the main subject.

A note of causion while using spot healing

It is wonderful to do the spot healing once or twice, but if there are too many spot healings to be done, it will be difficult to edit. It is thus preferable to have the lens cleaned or to move around the subject in order to prevent having the disruption when recording the image in the first place. When it comes to spotting healing, Lightroom does a good job.

Can I sell my modified image?

It should be noted that while this may look fine for posters, publishing, or social media, it is not permitted in photography competitions and will be regarded as modifying the original image. Furthermore, if you wish to sell photographs in reputable stock agencies or license your modified or manipulated image, not all agencies will consent to this. If it is for a wedding, or model photoshoot, then yes you can modify it as most of the work is on content aware and pot healing. This is where is mostly used and customers want to look good and you definitely need to use this feature to get better results.
